The hen ended up nesting and laying 11 eggs in the man's yard
Video footage of a hen turkey chasing a man around his truck on New York’s Staten Island has gone viral.
Noel Colon, a Grasmere resident, was about to leave for work when the hen attacked and the incident was caught on his home security camera. Colon told silive.com that he was heading to his truck to leave for work when he saw the turkey sitting on the walkway.
In an effort to avoid the bird, Colon said he climbed onto a nearby outdoor air-conditioning unit. But when he hopped down off the unit, the turkey began chasing him around and around the vehicle.
“I was freaked out,” he said. “I was concerned with just getting to work on time.”
Colon was eventually able to get in his truck and drive off, but he said the encounter was nerve racking.
“I’m usually never afraid with anything that happens in life. I just go with the flow. But that was something that was just completely, completely unexpected and I was freaked out.”
The next day, Colon said he noticed the turkey had laid an egg in the grass near where the chase took place. Soon after, there were 11 eggs, leading Colon to assume the hen was just trying to protect her nesting spot when she attacked.
Colon says he carefully cut the grass around the eggs so they are not disturbed.
“The turkey, she comes back every morning around 6:30 until like 7:30 a.m. and she hangs out there in the morning,” he said. “So, I didn’t want to move the eggs, because that’s hers.”
