Michigan Bowfisher Shoots Possible World Record Koi

The Glen Lake Association has hired a team of bowfishers to remove the invasive species from the lake

A Michigan bowfishing team has made waves after one of its members arrowed a giant koi from Glen Lake. In fact, the 32-inch fish weighed 23.5 pounds, possibly making it a bowfishing world record. The fish was one of four koi removed from the lake in an effort to combat the invasive species.

According to thegame730am.com, the Glen Lake Association began taking measures against the koi after receiving increasing reports of the fish over the past six years. Concerned about the potential negative impact on the lake's ecosystem, the association hired bowfishers from Thundering Aspens Sportsman Club to rid the lake of the koi. The ornamental fish, which originate from Japan, are often kept in small ponds and aquariums. But when released into natural waters, they grow and breed and end up often competing with native species for resources.

The impressively large koi was a pre-spawn female, and three of the four fish removed were full of eggs. One female koi can produce up to a million eggs during spawning.

The association plans to continue its eradication efforts next spring.
