Say Nevada and even the most dedicated waterfowler will think of Las Vegas, not duck hunting, although The Silver State offers some decent — B-grade — waterfowling options.

The state department of wildlife owns and maintains several wildlife management areas scattered across the state, some of which provide modest waterfowl opportunities throughout the season. The Mason Valley WMA southeast of Reno covers about 16,600 acres. Northeast of Sin City, Overton WMA holds controlled waterfowl hunts, complete with a reservation and assigned blind system. It's a popular place, as are all of Nevada's public waterfowling places. In southern Nevada, hunters can choose from Ash Meadows or Pahranagat national wildlife refuges. Just remember, extended drought in the Southwest might limit some opportunities.
