Carnivorous activity among whitetail deer is not as uncommon as you may think
Recent video footage of a deer eating a snake has garnered a lot of attention. The footage certainly looks odd, but the behavior is not as uncommon as some may assume.
According to rangerplanet.com, deer will feed on small dead animals, and sometimes even small live animals such as rabbits, birds, squirrels, and frogs. They are more likely to do this during dry winters when a shortage of food leads to an excessive lack of essential minerals, like phosphorus, salts, and calcium.
Realtree.com posted an article a few years ago showing footage of a deer eating a live baby bird. In fact, there are several YouTube videos of deer eating meat. There’s even footage showing a deer eating human remains at an outdoor forensic research facility where scientists were studying the process of decay and how scavengers interact with the bodies.
