Several mobility-impaired hunters recently enjoyed the thrill of the outdoors and took home fresh venison while participating in a special hunt hosted by Realtree Farms.

The event, held Oct. 21 through 23, was part of the Outdoors Beyond Barriers program, a Georgia Department of Natural Resources initiative that places increased focus on creating adaptive outdoors opportunities for people across the state.

“We’re extremely thankful for Bill, Tyler and the entire team at Realtree for their support and the opportunity they provided to our Outdoors Beyond Barriers champions to hunt at Realtree Farms,” said Walter Rabon, commissioner of the Georgia DNR. “While we are offering a number of public-land OBB hunts, private partners like Realtree are critical to the success of this new program.”

Four mobility-impaired hunters participated in the event, and they enjoyed success despite challenging conditions.

“We had a lot of fun hosting the Outdoor Beyond Barriers hunt at Realtree Farms,” said Realtree’s Tyler Jordan. “While the weather was warm and deer movement was a little slow, we were able to knock down nine does and have a lot of fun with these guys. Seeing them have success in the woods was great, but it was the camaraderie and laughs we shared around camp that I’ll remember most. Thanks to the Georgia DNR for involving us in the program, and we’re excited to see how we can continue to grow it going forward.”

OBB provides gateways for mobility-impaired Georgians to enjoy hunting and fishing while learning the skills and tools to become independent users of the state’s natural resources. The DNR is growing the program by hosting hunting and fishing events at each of the agency’s six regions around the state on public lands and fishing areas, while also providing additional partnership opportunities with private landowners throughout Georgia.
