A German Shepherd in Arizona killed a rabid bobcat as it attacked the dog’s owner.

According to wsfa.com, Moses, a 6-year-old German Shepherd, was on a neighborhood walk with his owner when a bobcat came out of nowhere.

The owner, who wishes not to be named, said, “This cat came at me and jumped me, and I thought it was a coyote because we don’t have bobcats around here. And so, I pushed it away, and it came right back.”

The bobcat scratched her arm before going after Moses.

“I was afraid. I kept saying, ‘Go, go, go,’ to Moses. I was wanting him to get away, but when I got back, he had killed a bobcat,” she said.

She said Moses killed the bobcat in her driveway by breaking its neck.

“He’s the hero of the day,” she said.

Wildlife officials said the bobcat tested positive for rabies.

According to Michael Colaianni, spokesperson for the Arizona Game and Fish Department, bobcats that approach humans likely have rabies.

“Bobcats are cats. They have ‘cat’ in their name. They’re pretty skittish. They don’t like people. They want to stay as far away from people as possible. So, when these situations happen and a bobcat is indeed being aggressive towards humans or pets, it almost always means that they’re going to test positive for rabies,” Colaianni said.

The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office said there were reports of three other bobcat attacks in the area within 48 hours.

Unsure whether the same animal is responsible for all of the attacks, officials are warning residents that other wildlife could be infected.

Fortunately, Moses is up to date on his rabies vaccine, but he will still be quarantined at home for the next month and a half.

His owner is also being treated for rabies exposure.

She said she is grateful to have Moses by her side.

“He’s amazing. Yeah, he’s an amazing dog, and he’s also very sweet.”
