A resident of the California home spotted the wild feline while reviewing the footage
Home surveillance camera footage caught the moment a mountain lion stuck its head through the doggy door of a home in Shingle Springs, California.
According to cbsnews.com, a resident at the home was reviewing the footage when they noticed the wild feline visitor.
California Department of Fish and Wildlife officials say the incident is unusual but possible, because the Shingle Springs area is mountain lion country.
"Lions will occasionally investigate homes and properties, particularly if there is food in the area," Peter Tira, with Fish and Wildlife, told CBS News Sacramento. "Their favorite food is deer, but they will also prey opportunistically on pets and small livestock."
Tira said when mountain lions are in an area, it’s important to take precautions, such as keeping pets in at night and securing small livestock.
People living in mountain lion country should also refrain from going out hiking or running alone, especially at dawn or dusk, when the big cats are most active.
Although extremely rare, mountain lion attacks happen. In 2024, a mountain lion killed a young man and injured another in El Dorado County. Fish and Wildlife officials tracked down and euthanized that lion.
