A fellow hunter shot the treed bear, which hit the man who was standing 10 feet from the base of the tree
A man has passed away after being struck by a bear that fell from a tree during a freak hunting accident in Lunenburg County, Virginia.
6 News Richmond reports that the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (VDWR) conducted an investigation of the incident and concluded that a group of hunters chased a bear into the tree. As the group moved away from the bottom of the tree, one of the hunters shot the bear, which fell and hit 58-year-old Lester C. Harvey Jr., who was standing approximately 10 feet from the bottom of the tree.
One of the hunters provided first aid until local fire and EMS arrived.
Harvey, who officials said had been in serious but stable condition after being transported from VCU South Hill to VCU Medical Center in Richmond, died of his injuries on Friday, Dec. 13.
According to his obituary, Harvey was a self-employed contractor and avid outdoorsman, and "was a friend to all and never met a stranger.”
He is survived by his wife, three sons, two daughters, and eight grandchildren.
"The Department is not currently seeking any charges related to this incident," VDWR officials said.
