Back in 2000, Bill Jordan snuck into a grown-up fence line and rattled up a giant Kansas whitetail, a deer that, based on its sheds, would score over 200 inches. Jordan knew a barbed-wire fence would create an obstacle in the way of getting an arrow into the buck, but with limited cover he elected to sit back away from the fence anyway, and do his best to thread an arrow between the strands.

The plan almost worked. The buck charged into the rattling sequence with ears pinned, and Bill was able to get drawn, take aim, and let fly. But one of the blades on Bill’s broadhead nicked a wire strand every so slightly. It was enough to cause Bill’s arrow to veer wildly off course and bury into the dirt. The buck trotted out of sight, unharmed.

The miss stung at the time (and still does a little bit today, according to Bill), but the encounter went on to become one of the most famous — or infamous — whitetail hunts ever captured on video. Twenty-six years later, “The Barbwire Buck” remains a fan favorite from the Realtree Monster Bucks series, and it easily earns its spot in Realtree’s 40 for 40 Monster Bucks series.
